A Complete Guide to Preventing Loneliness in Older Age
A reference guide for families, GPs, social prescribers, charities and journalists. It sets out the difference between loneliness (the gap between the company someone wants and the company they have) and social isolation (how much contact they actually have), and explains why emotional loneliness and social loneliness need different responses. It then covers why loneliness increases with age: bereavement, retirement, mobility loss, giving up driving, family moving away, sensory decline such as hearing loss, friends dying, becoming a carer, hospital stays and digital exclusion.
On health impact, the guide summarises the evidence that stronger social relationships are associated with around a 50 per cent greater likelihood of survival, an effect the researchers compared to smoking around 15 cigarettes a day, that loneliness is associated with roughly a 26 per cent higher risk of early death, and that lonely and isolated people tend to be less physically active, which accelerates deconditioning and falls risk. It also notes links to blood pressure, sleep, immune response and recovery, that over a million older people in the UK go a month without speaking to anyone they know, and that social isolation is one of the modifiable dementia risk factors identified by the 2024 Lancet Commission. The guide is explicit that these are associations rather than proven cause.
Practical sections cover risk factors to watch for, warning signs, what individuals can do, what families can do, and what communities and services can do, including social prescribing, discharge planning, volunteer befriending, community transport, universal venues, digital inclusion, paid companionship and the built environment. It closes with how to tell whether anything is working and honest answers to common myths.
