Companionship vs Befriending: Which Suits Your Parent?
Befriending is a free, volunteer run service from charities such as Age UK, Re-engage, The Silver Line and Independent Age, and it is a good first port of call for any family worried about a lonely older relative. The honest limits are worth knowing: there is often a waiting list that can run to months, families rarely choose or vet the specific volunteer, the scheme rather than the family sets how often and how long visits are, and volunteers can be reassigned or a scheme paused. Paid companionship works differently. You browse profiles and choose the companion yourself, you set the frequency and length of visits, every companion is enhanced DBS checked, ID verified, insured and trained, and visits usually start within days rather than months, from 25 pounds an hour.
This is not a choice between rivals. Many families use Age UK lunch clubs, helplines and local groups alongside a paid companion, and where there is a wait for befriending a companion can bridge the gap until a volunteer becomes available. The guide sets out a side by side comparison on cost, choice of visitor, typical wait to start, who sets frequency, consistency of visitor and vetting, plus honest lists of when each option is the better fit. A new dementia diagnosis is another common trigger, where a familiar, regular face can matter enormously, and our guide on companionship for someone with dementia includes our founder's own account of his dad's diagnosis and the loneliness it caused.
