Gentle days out in Sawbridgeworth: lovely, low-key ideas to share with an older parent
Easy, unhurried outings in Sawbridgeworth (CM21) for time with an older parent, with honest notes on what each place is like underfoot. The town is small, which is exactly its charm for a day like this. Nothing is far from anything else, the antiques shops alone could fill a happy afternoon, and the Stort towpath is a two minute walk from the station.
The River Stort Navigation runs alongside the town and the towpath is picked up easily near the railway station. It is flat and quiet, with narrowboats, ducks and the occasional heron, and it continues north for a couple of miles towards Thorley Wash. Ten minutes out and ten minutes back, with a pause to watch a boat go through, is a genuinely lovely hour, though the surface softens after rain. Pishiobury Park, on the southern edge of town, is eighteenth century parkland in the style of Capability Brown, with a car park off the Harlow Road, the A1184, and a pedestrian entrance from Newton Drive. It is grass parkland rather than surfaced paths, best in dry weather, and cattle graze it from July to October.
The town centre is small, flat and easy, with a cluster of antiques dealers round The Maltings by the station, including Acorn Antiques and Collectables Centre, Maltings Antiques, Cromwells Antique Centre and the Herts and Essex Antiques Centre. The Shed Coffee House in The Maltings is a good place to start or finish, and the Hand and Crown is reputed to be the oldest inn in Hertfordshire. Great St Mary's on Church Street is a Grade I listed parish church and the oldest building in the town, with a hearing loop, large print materials and a car park, though the toilets are across the road in Church House. Sawbridgeworth Marsh is an Essex Wildlife Trust reserve and a Site of Special Scientific Interest, rewarding for birds and wild flowers but uneven and often muddy, so not right for anyone using a stick, frame or wheelchair.
For warm indoor ideas, Sawbridgeworth Library on The Forebury is free and welcoming with its own car park at the rear, and the Memorial Hall nearby hosts community groups including the local U3A, which meets on the second Friday of the month and runs a gentle Wednesday walking group from the Bell Street car park. Keep the first trip short and let the day be about the company as much as the place. An AirCarers companion can accompany your parent on any of these, at their pace, and you get a short update afterwards.
