Gentle days out in Bishop's Stortford: lovely, low-key ideas to share with an older parent
Easy, unhurried outings in Bishop's Stortford (CM23) for time with an older parent, with honest notes on what each place is like underfoot. The town centre is flat and compact, so it rewards pottering rather than planning, and the market sets up twice a week across South Street, Potter Street, Market Square and North Street on Thursdays and Saturdays, 8.30am to 4.30pm, with a farmers and crafts market on the first Saturday of the month.
Castle Gardens, in the heart of town on the site of the old Waytemore Castle, is flat and level with flower beds and benches, so a wheelchair or walking frame is no trouble, although the Norman castle mound itself is steep and grassy and best admired from the path. From there you can pick up the River Stort towpath north through Grange Paddocks on East Herts Council's Riverside Trail, flat and green with narrowboats and ducks and benches in the War Memorial gardens, though the council notes the path is harder going for wheelchairs in winter.
For a warm indoor hour, Bishop's Stortford Museum sits inside South Mill Arts on South Road, free to enter, with a lift to the first floor, two accessible toilets and free parking with two Blue Badge bays. South Street Pantry is the town's best loved tea room and is wheelchair accessible. Southern Country Park, with its car park on Moor Hall Lane, CM23 4GZ, links into the waymarked Parks and Beyond walks, though the going is grassier. The town library is free and welcoming, and a memory cafe runs every Monday, 10am to 12pm, at the Oasis Lounge in the Methodist Church on South Street.
The point of any of these is not to rush. Keep the first trip short, take the weather and the walking surface into account, and let the day be about the company as much as the place. An AirCarers companion can accompany your parent on any of them, at their pace, and you get a short update afterwards. AirCarers Companion is a companionship platform, not a CQC registered agency, and does not provide personal or clinical care. Every companion is enhanced DBS checked, ID verified, fully insured and trained. To arrange a companion, call 07455 750006 or email lucie@aircarers.co.uk.
