    Hertford has the kind of compactness that makes it forgiving for a day out. The castle grounds, the river, the museum and a good coffee are all within a few minutes' walk of each other, so there is no need to commit to very much before you know how the day is going. If your parent tires after twenty minutes, that is a full and successful outing, not a disappointing one.

    It is easy to forget how much a short outing can do. A stretch of the legs, a change of scene, someone to talk to who is not just family, these things matter more than they look. Here are the outings we would actually point a family towards, with the honest bits included.

    Hertford Castle grounds

    The Castle grounds are the easy heart of a Hertford day out, flat lawns, benches, and a slope down to the river, all a few steps from the town centre. One thing worth knowing: the gatehouse building itself is Town Council offices these days, not generally open to wander round, though it does open its doors on selected Open Days through the year, worth a check on hertford.gov.uk if the inside would interest your parent. The grounds themselves are free and open every day, which is really the point for most visits.

    A riverside stroll, as long or short as suits

    Hertford is criss-crossed by the River Lea, and the riverside paths offer some of the gentlest walking around. Hartham Common, the big green open space beside the river, is flat, calm and ideal for a short stroll with plenty of room to stop and rest. Watch the ducks, the boats and the comings and goings, then turn back whenever the legs say so.

    For a shorter version of the same idea, The Sele and the Millennium Garden, just by the castle, are smaller riverside green spaces with ancient yews and a bit of Roman history underfoot, an easy add-on rather than a separate trip. A little further along, The Wash is a flat grassy spot with a well loved sculpture, the Swan and the Cow, worth wandering to if the legs are willing.

    A gentle river cruise to Ware and back

    For something a bit special, the Ware and Hertford Waterbus runs a relaxed cruise along the River Lee between the two towns. It is a restful way to see the countryside from the water, drifting through a couple of original working locks, with refreshments and a comfortable seat the whole way. It is also genuinely accessible, with space for wheelchairs, so it is a rare outing that works even for someone less steady on their feet. It sails from beside The Old Barge in Hertford town centre, weekends from April to October, plus some Thursdays, Fridays and Bank Holiday Mondays in August, with each leg taking around 75 to 90 minutes and two locks to pass through.     A coffee in town, and the Charter Market

    Hertford's centre, around Parliament Square and the old streets, is full of friendly independent cafes. The one we like best is Soul Seed on Parliament Square, though it has grown into a bit of a wellness cafe and clinic hybrid these days, so hours can vary through the week, worth a quick check before you go. If you would rather have people watching with your tea, Hertford's Charter Market sets up around Salisbury Square and Maidenhead Street on Saturdays, with fruit, veg and fish stalls out on Fridays too.

    Hertford Museum and the library

    Hertford Museum on Bull Plain is open Tuesday to Saturday, 10am to 5pm, and Sunday afternoons, closed Mondays. It has a lift to every floor, an accessible toilet and a small Jacobean style knot garden tucked behind it, a nice quiet spot to sit once you have had your fill of the exhibits, and its displays of local history are wonderful for sparking memories in anyone who has known the town a long time. The town library on Maidenhead Street is another warm, free and sociable place to spend some quiet time, and it is always worth asking what coffee mornings or friendly groups are on.

    A friendly group, and a date for the diary

    If your mum or dad would enjoy a bit more company, Hertford has memory cafes worth seeking out, including the Hertford Memory Cafe, though it is worth a call ahead to confirm the current day and venue, as these things can change. Keep an eye out too for the Hertford Castle Beer and World Food Festival each July, a free, relaxed afternoon in the castle grounds that can be a lovely bit of colour and bustle for someone who has been having quiet weeks.
