    Cedars Park

    Cedars Park is the jewel of a Broxbourne day out. Look out for the old flint arch and the ruins of Theobalds Palace, once home to King James I, a nice bit of history to point out on a gentle circular walk that is short enough for anyone easing back into being active.

    Broxbourne sits right by the River Lee, where the riverside footpaths are flat, easy and dotted with places to rest. For a walk with a bit of purpose, the Lee Valley Water Vole Trail starts at the Old Mill and Meadows car park on Mill Lane and follows the river with a good chance of spotting wildlife along the way.     Hertfordshire Zoo, for a special day

    For a bigger treat, especially lovely when grandchildren are visiting, Hertfordshire Zoo is right on the doorstep, home to everything from penguins and red pandas to big cats. Paths are tarmac or compact earth and mostly level, wheelchairs and mobility scooters are available to hire on site, and there is a free carer ticket for anyone with proof of PIP, DLA, Attendance Allowance or an Access Card. It is a paid attraction, worth checking current prices and opening times, but it makes for a memorable outing that brings the generations together.

    A coffee and a potter round town

    Sometimes the simplest outing is the best. Broxbourne and the nearby parades have cafes and shops for an easy hour of pottering, with somewhere warm to sit never far away. If you are further afield, Hoddesdon's Wednesday and Friday markets are a short drive and worth combining with a visit.

    When the weather turns, the local library is warm, free and sociable, and always worth asking what groups or coffee mornings are on. Broxbourne also has welcoming clubs and gentle activity sessions for older people, run through the likes of Be Broxbourne and Age UK Hertfordshire.
